online casino history
The practice of gambling is old-timer’s hobby, indeed; historians and archaeologists claim that we have been gambling for thousands of years. Proof of our ancestors’ penchant for gambling is evident in many cultures throughout the world, and the practice even appears to have been an independent part of multiple ancient civilizations, with mentions in histories from Ancient China and the Middle East to Elizabethan England and the jungle peoples of South and Central America.
The word “casino” was first used in seventeenth century Venice, Italy, although the establishment to which the name referred was not what we would call a casino in today’s world. This Venetian casino was a house reserved for wagering activities during Carnival season, erected with the hopes of regulating an out-of-control gambling situation.
The saloons of the Old American West also served as a casino environment for settlers, providing travelers with a place to meet, drink, and gamble.
The online casino world that we are lucky enough to have access to today is a far cry from the games of chance that our relatives played many generations ago, but playing online casino games is a wonderful way to carry on a proud human tradition.
